Client: Large Local Authority
Services: Architecture, Project Management

The local Sure Start Service, working on behalf of the Borough Council, approached us to carry out feasibility studies in locating urban sites for three new graduated children’s centres to support the disadvantaged communities in the area. Once sites were approved we were assigned to design and Project Manage the construction of the new centres. The facilities included a crèche area for 0-5 years, fully secure play areas, Adult education room with IT facilities, administration office space, small consultation room and staff and kitchen facilities.

The centres provide access to health services, including health visitors, midwifery and speech and language therapy. There are parent and toddler groups in all centres, and a wide range of other family support services. The programme also assists parents in their aspirations towards employment and encourages further education. Members of the community are also able to use the facilities for alternative activities.

The Council’s programme was demanding, requiring the delivery of all three facilities to meet a tight schedule and within a very restrictive budget. In order to accommodate the quick construction period, we ensured two of the centres were constructed using the SIPS TEKHaus Building System. We were also able to fulfil the council’s wish for a consistent appearance across centres.
