The Students Union Nursery required expansion to allow for a 60% increase in child intakes. We were appointed to design a new facility on a nearby temporary car park.

The facility was designed to separate the private administration areas and the children’s spaces with a spacious link lobby at the main entrance. The administration area included offices, kitchen, utility room and parents’ lounge, and the children’s spaces offered a facility for children aged between 0-5. The children all have access to an external play area in order to extend the teaching space and encourage active learning. Areas have been developed with hard and soft landscaping allowing activities to flow both inside and outside.

Only ten months was available between our appointment and the required opening date of the new Nursery, and this tight programme led to a decision to select a prefabricated, modular building system. With careful choice of materials and form, the appearance of a typically standardised modular building was avoided. The use of timber cladding and render colours to harmonise with those on neighbouring buildings, allowed for effective integration within the surrounding context. This tight programme included a two stage tender, incorporating an initial open market tender, shortlisting process, interview, building visit and a second stage tender to our preferred candidates.
