Client: Major UK University
Services: Building Surveying

The University made the decision to replace the HumSS Copper Roof due to areas of water ingress and decay. aed undertook a series of surveys and studies relating to the most suitable replacement material. The final solution was to strip the existing roof covering and associated insulation and decking and replace it with a new ply deck, rigid insulation to provide improved thermal performance and cover the area with standing seam zinc panels.

Following resolution of the suitable construction techniques, aed applied for and received planning permission. We then produced detailed design packages, liaising with specialist Zinc suppliers due to the unique problems posed by the chemical properties of zinc and copper materials.

aed provided a full project management service throughout all stages of the project. This was particularly challenging given the large number of stakeholders and building user groups. Other management challenges arose relating to the decant plans (finding alternative locations for building users), budgetary constraints (finances spanning multiple financial years and allocation pots) and programme issues caused by exam periods and conference events.
