Client: Primary School

aed assisted the school management with an extensive remodelling masterplan to improve the school facilities across a number of phases.

Phase 1 - Upgrade of existing class bases, including refurbishment of toilets, decorations, flooring and colour-themed storage/space division units.

Phase 2 - Second phase of class base improvements; a continuation of phase 1.

Phase 3 - Remodelling and extension to create a new school entrance, secure entrance lobby, interview and meeting rooms, staff room, and Head Teacher and reception offices. To obtain maximum value from the restricted funds, a redundant store and toilet areas were transformed into administration spaces as part of the remodelling.

Phase 4 - The main hall doubled as a primary circulation route in the design of the original school. This was located between the reception and administration offices and the class bases. Phase 4 constructed a glazed roof over the main courtyard, which opened this up to the primary circulation through removal of walls and the provision of rooflights to adjacent spaces. This created an open-plan hub at the centre of the school which not only acted as the primary circulation from reception to the class base areas, but also provided a library and resource area.

Phase 5 - This phase constructs an extension to provide a flexible multi-use class base, accessible out of hours and with its own toilet and kitchen. This acts as a drama, art, and music space. Out of school hours it can be used for meetings, out of school club, play-group and community space.

Challenges
• Working to very tight budget and programme during summer recess
• Working within an occupied building creating a clear focal point to enter the school building.
