Client: Primary School
Services: Architecture, Project Management, CDM-C

Priory Primary School approached us to design a replacement Pupil Behavioural Unit to support pupils from a number of different schools with very complex behavioural, social and emotional needs.

The facility will replace existing accommodation of a manager’s office, time-out/support room, general teaching space, snack preparation area, dining and social space, toilet facilities and an enclosed grassed play area.

Although the current base is detached from the main school, it upholds an outstanding success rate of re-integration into mainstream education. Being located more centrally to the main school, it is felt the new Unit will provide even greater integration opportunities, thus supporting the school’s ethos of diversity and mutual respect in order to develop each pupil’s self-belief and independence.

The client’s openness and forward thinking has allowed for a modern approach to the fabric of the building, which continues the school’s ethos of strength in diversity as applied to the built environment.

Challenges:
• Incorporating a new build alongside an existing building of small proportions
• Designing a balance between an independent facility set against goals of integration with the main school.
